Olympic Games

Sustainability watchdog for London 2012

In 2008, the biggest construction project in Europe was the London Olympic Park. Built to host the London 2012 Games – with a budget of £9.5Bn – it transformed a derelict and polluted East London site into Europe’s most significant new urban green space with superb sports venues and sustainable housing.

The Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 (CSL) is an independent body that monitors, reports, and holds the delivery bodies accountable on the London 2012 Games’ environmental impact and support a sustainable legacy. CSL is unique in the Olympic Games’ history as the first intermediary between the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and over 100 organisations and stakeholders. CSL held quarterly workshops to discover concerns from groups then report back to the ODA.

Funded by Greater London Authority, Doublesided was commissioned to redesign the CSL website ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Restructure the website

The website is modernised with a neat, airy design and clear structure to easily navigate the plethora of information on sustainability issues.

Information is categorised into publications, reports, news and blog. The homepage is designed with a sustainability dashboard to pull the most recent data from these sections to allow visitors to quickly access and keep track of sustainable issues and developments.

Find and download reports

Providing independent assurance and commentary on the London 2012 programme’s sustainability meant regular reports and publications on various topics including landfill, sustainable food, diversity and inclusion, mobility, energy conservation, logistics, materials, transport and sponsorship.

We created a searchable reports area so visitors can find and download reports, minutes of meetings and various documents. This functionality made it easier for visitors to drill down and find the information they needed.

Track sustainability recommendations over time

Published reports contain many recommendations to achieve sustainability targets – these were extracted to create a searchable database with all suggestions in one place. This provides complete transparency and makes it more accessible for visitors to keep tabs on the sustainability of the London 2012 Games.

Secure member area

We created a secure document area for sharing confidential documents to relevant stakeholders.
“Doublesided were a pleasure to work with, taking the time and effort to ensure that we thoroughly understood every stage of the process.

We are delighted with our new website, it allows us to communicate much more effectively with our stakeholders and make complex information easily accessible to the wider public. We have many compliments about how easy it is to navigate information on the site and how engaging it is.”
